The Utah Democratic Party could have two lawmakers doubling as party officers soon, if all goes according to plan for Representative Brian King (D, SLC). The two-term Representative from District 28 has put his name in the hat to become his Party’s Treasurer, a post being vacated by former Party Treasurer Rob Miller.

We called Representative King to ask why he was running, and received this statement:

“Many folks have asked me to consider running, I thought about it and came to the conclusion that it would be a great opportunity. I’m very interested in making sure the party does what it needs to do to gain greater support among the people of Utah, and that we do a better job of reaching out and educating people what Democrats believe in. I firmly believe that if people understand what the Democratic Party believes in and stands for, they would choose to be a Democrat rather than a Republican.”

Thus far, no candidates for Democratic Party officer positions are being challenged. Senator Jim Dabakis is running to retain his seat as Party Chairman, Josie Valdez is running for reelection as Party Vice Chair, Breanne Miller is running for Secretary, and Representative Brian King is running for Treasurer. All positions are two-year terms. Elections will be held at the Party’s organizing convention on June 22, 2013. Filing deadline to run for office is April 13.

On the Republican side of the aisle, only two candidates have officially filed to takeover for Chairman Thomas Wright, who is not seeking reelection. The two candidates are Henry Glasheen, chairman of the Summit County GOP Party, and Marco Diaz, chair of the Utah Republican Hispanic Assembly. Rumor has it that former Representative and failed congressional candidate Carl Wimmer, former State Senator Dan Liljenquist, and former Chaffetz-staffer Michelle Scharff may also enter the race for Chair.

In the other races for the Republican Executive Committe, Ben Horsley has filed to run for Party Vice Chair, and Tom Clay has filed to run for Secretary. No candidates have filed to run for GOP Treasurer as of this writing. The Republican Party’s elections will be held on May 18th.
